HOW OBO WORKS

The depot network comprises 5 primary depots and 10 secondary depots. Primary shipments between primary depots form the foundation of the network timetable. Secondary shipments connecting secondary depots are timed to link overland journeys to/from primary shipments. The network hub is the primary depot located near Kuala Lumpur in the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ), connected to Westports, which recently cracked the top 10 container ports in the world. The network hub enables our own transshipment and reconsolidation operation in a secure warehouse we control. Demand-led shipments are timed to link with all of the above.

Six features that differentiate Own Bike Odyssey (OBO) from standard international freight forwarding.

1. Reliability always comes first

Klaus and Max with their motorcycles
Klaus and Max (father and son) launched from Milan to ride Central Asia.

OBO selects shipping lines, service lanes and sailings for operational reliability. Its model is not driven by the narrow margins or preferential carrier arrangements that influence standard freight forwarding.

2. Depot-to-depot control

Pauly with motorcycle in Patagonia
Pauly launched from Valparaiso, exploring the south before chasing autumn north to Colombia and beyond.

OBO coordinates secure consolidation, storage, customs handling and motorcycle handover through selected depots and specialist partners experienced with this type of shipment.

3. One container, one coordinated shipment

Nolan with motorcycles at Port Klang
Nolan finished customs clearance before departing Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ).

Compatible rider demand is consolidated into one FCL that is planned, packed and managed as one coordinated operation.

4. Purpose-built for motorcycles

Steve riding through Morocco
Steve launched from Milan for a 4.5-month loop of Europe, Morocco, Scandinavia and the Balkans.

The packing system, handling process and shipment planning are designed specifically for privately owned used motorcycles.

5. Seasonal timing

Ray with his motorcycle after launching from Kuala Lumpur
Ray launched from Kuala Lumpur, en route to the China crossing from Laos to Kyrgyzstan.

Shipments are timed around riding seasons, connected overland journeys and practical entry and exit windows.

6. Connected return opportunities

Mark's motorcycle during his journey through South America
Mark launched from Valparaiso to Ushuaia, then rode north to Colombia before storing his motorcycle in Panama to resume his journey later.

The network is planned around linked outbound, onward and return shipments rather than isolated one-way movements.

THE POWER OF FULL CONTAINER LOAD (FCL)

THE POWER OF FULL CONTAINER LOAD (FCL)

Most motorcycle shipping disaster stories - including delays, cost blowouts, repeated handling and motorcycle damage - result from Less-than-Container Load (LCL) freight. Others result from a disconnect between Origin and Destination: an origin agent may readily send a motorcycle almost anywhere, but the documentation and processes completed at Origin are critical to successful customs processing and collection at Destination. OBO uses Full Container Load (FCL), with one sealed container dedicated to our customers’ motorcycles from Origin to Destination, and ships only through strategically selected depot partners who specialise in the processes required for foreign-registered used motorcycles for touring purpose. The power of FCL, coupled with capable partners and clear communication at both Origin and Destination, gives OBO control over packing, handling, documentation, carrier and service-lane selection, streamlined customs processing and motorcycle handover - ultimately delivering a reliable service.

HOW THE HECK DID OBO COME ABOUT?

Riders dream of shipping their motorcycles overseas for adventures across the world’s great mountain ranges, but the logistics involved often keep that dream out of reach. The usual story is spending big money on a two-week motorcycle tour that barely scratches the surface. But what if riders understood the seasonal reality of intercontinental motorcycle travel - and that motorcycles need to be transported at roughly the same time, much like seasonal migration? What if that collective rider demand could be consolidated into FCL opportunities and the logistics burden removed?

Would you ship your motorcycle to explore the world?

WHY US

Own Bike Odyssey is run by Dylan Reid, who is based in Brisbane, Australia. He is cursed with engineering degrees, intuition for left field logistics, obsessive compulsive optimiser disorder and other social ineptitude. These skillsets coupled with his experience getting proper flogged riding motorcycles round the world has seen Dylan evolve into a weapon when it comes to planning and executing this niche service. What was born as a passion-led project, Own Bike Odyssey has evolved into a fantastic bang-for-buck motorcycle logistics service that will see many more riders overlanding independently round the world (RTW) upon their trusted iron steeds.

Please appreciate that OBO ships full container loads (FCL) only. We do not ship less than container loads (LCL), offer air freight, or ship anywhere at any time. Our service operates on selected routes and is tailored specifically for motorcycle overlanders.

We receive a high volume of broader overlander enquiries and, as much as we would like to assist the wider motorcycle-overlanding community, we simply do not have the capacity and must remain focused on supporting OBO customers.
