Locations
- Port of Valparaíso: arrival port for the container.
- Santiago International Airport: Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport.
- Pajaritos Bus Terminal: major public transport hub between Santiago and Valparaíso.
- Plaza Wheelwright: Valparaíso meeting point, beside the Customs Office (Aduana).
- The secure terminal depot is approximately 15 minutes from the meeting point.
Import
Process
Under the local import rule in effect since December 2025, the registered motorcycle owner must be present to complete the Temporary Import Permit (TIP). A Letter of Authority is no longer accepted for this import process. OBO can no longer move the motorcycles away from the terminal depot for alternative storage or domestic trucking before import.
- Meet the agent at 9am at Plaza Wheelwright in Valparaíso.
- Complete the customs documents.
- Travel together to the terminal depot for customs inspection and motorcycle collection.
- Fuel is approximately 8 km from the depot.
Motorcycle collection is planned for Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a limit of 15 riders per day. OBO and the local agent may arrange Tuesday or Thursday collection if demand requires it. The aim is to have riders launched by noon.
The Chile TIP is valid for three months and resets each time the motorcycle re-enters Chile. It must remain valid until the motorcycle completes customs export. Riders using a later return shipment should time their final land-border entry into Chile against that shipment’s motorcycle delivery cut-off.
Storage
Day one of destination storage is the container unpack day. Two weeks of free storage are included. Additional storage is US$15 plus 19% tax per motorcycle per day, approximately AU$25 per day.
Timings
Example timings from Melbourne, based on the detailed update provided 26 August 2026:
- 6–19 November: two-week free storage delivery window.
- 20 November: container pack day.
- 28 November, 10 pm: estimated vessel departure.
- 12 January, 11 pm: estimated vessel arrival in Valparaíso.
- 15 or 18 January: container unpack.
- 18 January: earliest possible motorcycle collection.
- 20 January: most likely collection.
- 29 January: recommended collection date.
OBO recommends using the two weeks of free storage in Valparaíso as a schedule buffer. The detailed timing plan is aligned to the latest shipping line schedule around three months before estimated vessel departure.
Export
Process
For export from Chile, motorcycles must be delivered with a valid Chile Temporary Import Permit, called a Título de Importación Temporal de Vehículos (TITV). Once the motorcycle enters the depot process, Chilean Customs finalises the TITV. OBO’s local agent cannot accept a motorcycle for export if its TITV has expired.
The motorcycle delivery deadline for the Valparaíso to Melbourne example shipment is Wednesday 2 June 2027. Motorcycles must be clean and ready for export handling. Professional export cleaning can be arranged for CLP50,000 per motorcycle, including trailer transport to and from the cleaning location. Cleaning also matters for Australia’s biosecurity inspection on arrival.
Storage
Two weeks of free terminal storage before container packing are included. Earlier private storage in Quilpué is available for US$100 per month. Transfer from Quilpué to the terminal depot is US$75 per motorcycle.
Timings
Example timings to Melbourne, based on the upcoming 2027 shipment:
- 24 May 2027: assumed start of the two-week free terminal-storage period.
- 2 June: last day to deliver the motorcycle to the depot.
- 4 June: container pack.
- 10 June: estimated vessel departure from Valparaíso.
- 36 days: estimated sea freight.
- 16 July: estimated vessel arrival in Melbourne.
- 7 days destination time plus 14 days schedule buffer.
- 6 August: motorcycles available in Melbourne.
- 64 days total duration from container pack to motorcycles available in Melbourne.
Detailed timings will be aligned to an updated shipping line schedule around three months before departure.
The final land-border crossing into Chile must be after 1 March 2027 so the three-month TITV remains valid when the motorcycle is delivered for export.
Domestic trucking options
Optional domestic trucking after import is available at current indicative third-party rates:
- Valparaíso to or from Santiago: US$150.
- Santiago to Punta Arenas: US$610 for motorcycles up to 650 cc, or US$745 over 650 cc.
- Punta Arenas to Santiago: US$410.
- Calama, Antofagasta or Iquique to Valparaíso: US$550.
All listed trucking charges are subject to 19% Chilean tax and must be reconfirmed before use.
