Australia rewards a long motorcycle journey planned around climate rather than one national season. OBO's Milan-to-Australia cycle is designed to ship and securely store motorcycles during Europe's riding off-season, creating an extended Australian ride window before the following return cycle.

In practical terms, the cycle can trade one European riding season for close to a year of riding opportunity in Australia. The seasons are reversed, but Australia spans tropical, subtropical, arid, temperate and cool climate zones, so the best route depends on where and when you intend to ride.

Australia's ride windows

The tropical north has a distinct wet and dry season and is generally best from May to October. Tasmania and the cooler southern regions suit summer riding. Much of the temperate, subtropical and arid interior is most comfortable in autumn or spring, avoiding the most extreme heat and cold.

Summer school holidays make popular beaches, national parks, rainforest waterholes, accommodation and campsites busy. An effective timings plan follows suitable climate zones progressively instead of attempting to ride the whole continent within one fixed seasonal window.

A staged Australian journey

Secure depot storage allows riders to collect and return their motorcycles within the operating window and split the journey where appropriate. If you leave Australia while a foreign-registered motorcycle remains in the country, you must follow the CPD temporary-import rules and obtain the required permission before departure.
